Martyn Phillips was appointed as WRU Group Chief Executive in July 2015 and took up the post in the autumn of the same year.

He had formerly been CEO of the £4bn home improvement company B&Q where profits trebled to £238m during his tenure.

Before taking up the WRU role he was a director of the Leading Edge management and leadership consultancy. He has also been a non-executive director of Hydrogen Group plc, the global recruitment and talent company, becoming the Senior Independent Director and Chair of the remuneration committee. He joined Kingfisher plc in 1994 and held a number of senior management roles in the company until he left B&Q in 2014.

He joined the main Board of B&Q in 2005 as HR Director while in 2008 he became the Retail Director with responsibility for all stores, logistics and property. In 2011 he became the CEO of B&Q and also joined the Kingfisher Operating Board which oversees global interests in nine countries. Before joining B&Q he held various management roles at Woolworths plc and prior to that was a general management graduate trainee with W H Smith.

He was educated at Fishguard Grammar School and UWIC in Cardiff, where he gained an honours degree in Sports Science, before achieving a diploma in Management Studies at Oxford Brookes College and then a Diploma in Strategic Retailing from Templeton College, Oxford.

Whilst at school he won Wales international caps at U15 level and was a member of the Welsh Schools Under 18 squad before going on to represent Welsh Colleges. He was also a schoolboy Welsh sprint champion.

He is married with two children and has maintained an active interest in rugby through coaching his son's club team.

He has worked closely with some of the country's most gifted business leaders during his 20 year tenure with Kingfisher, along with strategic leaders from the world of sport including Sir Dave Brailsford, from British Cycling, who he has worked with since 2008.

He has also run a leadership programme for Premiership Rugby Academy Directors via the RFU. In 2013 he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Southampton Solent University for his services to business. Also in 2013 he was placed in the top 15 most influential HR practitioners and the top 100 Retail Power Players in the UK.
