Newport Take Firm Stance

While football is reeling from another wave of soccer hooliganism, one
Welsh rugby club has taken a firm stance on maintaining its family values.

Two fans were ejected from the ground at Rodney Parade on Friday night for
using “abusive and foul language” during the Heineken Cup clash between
Newport and Newcastle.

More than that, Newport officals announced their actions over the tannoy
to the 8,156 crowd to underline their stance. They received a huge ovation.

“Two supporters were abusing the players and referee and were asked to shut
up by fans around them,” said Newport communications manager Phil Davies.

“They then turned their attentions on to the fans around them. The
stewards were informed, the Police were called and they were removed from
the ground – it was as simple and quick as that.

“When you are selling yourself to the public as a safe, fun and truly
sporting environment then you cannot afford for anyone to spoil the
enjoyment of those people around them

“The atmosphere at Rodney Parade was fantastic and the people of South
East Wales are proud of what we are trying to achieve both on and off the
field here at Newport.

“The two individuals involved were instantly warned about their behaviour
and asked the curb their language. They failed to do so and they were
quickly made to realise we will not tolerate bad behaviour at Newport.”

On the field, the Black and Ambers ran in seven tries in their 53-17
demolition of Newcastle.

It was the perfect dress rehersal for their top of the table clash with
Welsh/Scottish League leaders Llanelli at Rodney Parade on Friday night.

“We are hoping to top 11,000 fans on Friday and I think the action we took
during the Newcastle game will actively encourage people to return to
Rodney Parade,” added Davies.
