Welsh Schools Battle Hard Against Young Kiwis
WELSH SCHOOLS 9 NEW ZEALAND SCHOOLS 18
A crowd of more than 2,000 turned up at The Gnoll to see a highly competitive game in which the Welsh defenders cut down their rivals time after time.
Two first-half tries by the Kiwis, the first after 20 minutes from No 8 Liam Messam from a line-out and the second the result of a clean midfield break by the centre and captain Luke McAlister, set them on course for victory.
McAlister converted his own try, but three penalties from the boot of Llandovery College full back Ricky Williams cut the gap to three points by half-time.
Two late McAlister penalties in a wind assisted second half enabled New Zealand to hold onto their lead, but the Jonathan Edwards led Welsh side emerged with great credit.
