Delegates from the 239 member clubs of the WRU and those from the affiliated bodies voted four to one against the proposal put forward by the Union’s general committee to reduce the number of teams in the Premier Division from nine to six.
General committee chairman Glanmor Griffiths proposed the motion for the Union, which aimed to reduce from nine to six the number of teams in the top flight as soon as ‘legally practicable’.
The motion also advocated forming a Joint Venture Company, made up of equal representation from the Union and the Premier Division clubs, to run the professional club game.
In the end, though, the vote was 325 against and only 98 for.
A second motion, proposing an expansion to 12 teams in the top tier from next season, was withdrawn by one of the 10 porposing clubs, Aberavon.
