Wales went down 59-7 to New Zealand in Johannesburg in the third-fourth match of the first IRB Under-21 World Cup.
South Africa defeated Australia 24-21 in the final, while favourites New Zealand had to be content with third place.
The only Welsh score came from Swansea full-back Gareth Swales, who crossed for a try that Cardiff fly half Nicky Robinson converted.
New Zealand scored eight tries, all converted, and an early penalty goal.
