Wales Fall To England In Final Pool Match
WALES 14, ENGLAND 28
Hong Kong Sevens champions England outscord Wales by four tries to two to ensure a quarter-final place in the IRB World Series Emirates Airline Cardiff Sevens.
Jason Forster’s Welsh side went into their final Pool match with a chance of qualifying, but only victory would have been good enough to earn them a place in the top eight.
With the French having beaten Russian 14-12, there was a glimmer of hope of Forster’s men, but with England taking a 14-0 lead in the first half through tries by Pat Sanderson and Richard Houghton, both of which Phil Jones converted, it was an uphill taks.
Jones then added a third try and conversion for England at the start of the second half before Wales hit back.
Shaun James and Forster grabbed tries which Arwel Thomas converted to give tghe home crowd something to shout about.
But as they chased the final two scores they needed to win, England pounced for try number four through Tony Roques. Jones added the conversion to make it 13 points in the match.
