Llanelli Win Top Of The Table Clash
Llanelli beat North Wales 28-22 on Sunday in the Women’s Super League to secure their place at the top of the table. Welsh International Kylie Wilson scored two of the North Wales tries but Non Evans scored a hat trick, her second of the tournament, to give the Scarlets victory.
Pontypridd had a point to prove against Swansea after losing their last two games in the closing minutes. Winger Claire Flowers scored two of the nine Pontypridd tries. Welsh internationals Amy Broadstock, Gemma Allan and Jamie Kift all had good games, as did the promising youngster Gemma Williams who scored her first try of the tournament.
Michaela Reed scored Swansea’s only points with the final score 53-5 to Pontypridd.
Newport played host to UWIC at Blackwood RFC. UWIC started strongly pressing the Newport line for the first twenty minutes but Newport defended well and it wasn’t until injury time in the first half that UWIC finally broke through allowing Prop Jenny Davies over the line. Scrum Half Kerry Jenkins converted giving the University side a 7-0 lead at the break.
Newport started the second half confidently, attacking the UWIC line but a forward pass to full back Helena Parfitt denied Newport the equaliser. However, Louise Rickard soon evened the scores with a lovely try under the UWIC posts. Fly half Vicki Jennings converted.
With twenty minutes remaining UWIC’s fly half Naomi Thomas scored a run away try when UWIC capitalised on a mistake by the Newport winger. It was an easy conversion for Kerry Jenkins. UWIC looked set to run away with the game after Sara Wheldon scored their third but Newport managed to contain them. Some poor passing squandered Newport chances and the game finished 7-19. Newport have not won a game in the League this season. They travel to Swansea next week, who are also looking for their first victory after losing to Pontypridd.
