North Wales Remain Unbeaten

After a dominant performance against Swansea the week before, Pontypridd proved a much sterner challenge, with the South Walians dominating through their forwards in the opening quarter.

Excellent physical play by scrumhalf Rachel Davies of Vagabonds in the Isle of Man was the first decisive attack by the North Wales Ladies, which carried them out of their own half. When the Northern Ladies finally managed to get into the opposition 22, they capitalise on this through a try by open side flanker and captain Kylie Wilson, which was converted by Caernarfon’s Kate Jones.

The remainder of the first half saw Ponty try and out-muscle the North Wales forwards, but aggressive first up tackles and persistence around the mauls kept the score to 7-0 at the break. The second spell was again dominated by ponty forwards, led by an excellent ball carrying display by Amy Broadstock of Llandaff North. The North Wales ladies finally surcame to the pressure and conceded a soft try through a lapse in defence around the fringes.

With the game evenly poised at 7-a-peice, the North Wales ladies showed their character and mounted several strong attacks on the Ponty try line, which finally resulted in an excellent back line try for Dolgellau’s own Wales U19 player, Ellen Evans. The try was converted by Jones, resulting in a 14-7 victory and giving North Wales their second win in the Super League this season.

The North Wales coach, Wayne Pugh, commented that his team “soaked up the pressure well and showed a much improved defensive effort from the previous week”.

The next fixture is an away game against Llanelli at Stradey Park on the 29th of September.
