Caps were awarded by Wales for the second occasion in a match against the Barbarians. Flankers Kingsley Jones of Ebbw Vale and Martyn Williams of Pontypridd being the two new faces in the starting line-up. Jones took the place of the injured Hemi Taylor.
Cardiff hooker Jonathan Humphreys led Wales and found two Welshmen against him in the Barbarians side as Nigel Walker of Cardiff started on the left wing and was joined later by Pontypridd flanker Richie Collins.
It was a very makeshift Barbarian side, led by All Black Aaron Pene, while for Wales, Ieuan Evans won the 64th of his 72 caps, Gareth Llewellyn had cap number 48 and Neil Jenkins his 42nd.
The six points recorded by Jenkins took him to 449 for Wales and took his conversion count to 52. Nigel Davies took his try tally to five in his 27th appearance, before Justin Thomas replaced him for his eighth cap, but his first as a Cardiff player.
Centres Stephane Glas and Richard Dourthe appeared against Wales in the Stadium just a month later as France won a non-championship match by 40-33
