Mr Griffiths has been Honorary Treasurer since 1984, Chairman of the WRU General Committee since 1997 and Chairman of Millennium Stadium plc for the last six years.

He said, ‘After much heart-searching and a great deal of sadness I have decided not to stand for any position with either the Welsh Rugby Union or Millennium Stadium plc.

The reason for my making this decision is due to a change in my circumstances. My son, daughter-in-law and grandson have decided to settle in the Southern Hemisphere and, in a few months time, my wife Mair and I will be joining them for at least a couple of years.

‘It has been an honour and privilege to be at the forefront of Welsh rugby for the best part of 20 years and I leave with genuine optimism for the future of the game.’

DAVID MOFFETT, WRU Group Chief Executive:
‘I developed a very close working relationship with Glanmor since arriving in Wales and I enjoyed working with him as we formed a very good working partnership. He will be missed and now is the time to reflect on what he achieved for Welsh rugby, which was enormous.

I have been aware of his intentions of standing down for some time. He was the instigator of one of the major elements of modernisation the WRU has undergone in bringing in myself as the first Group Chief Executive.

He was waiting to see how the transition would happen and now that he has seen that the new system has been put in place, he is ready to move on.

He has been the prime mover in changing the governance of the WRU since my arrival. I think now he is happy to stand down and let the new system that he has set up take over.

In five to 10 years’ time, everyone will realise what an asset the Millennium Stadium is to Welsh rugby – it is an icon throughout Wales and the world.

There is no need for an executive chairman for the Millennium Stadium, but a chairman in the traditional sense of the word, to chair the board and to support the chief executive and employed staff.’

DAVID PICKERING, WRU Vice-chairman:
‘Glanmor’s hard work and courage are matched by his commitment to the Welsh game over two decades.

He leaves an outstanding legacy to Wales and rugby in the shape of the Millennium Stadium, the iconic landmark of Wales across the world. The commercial benefits to Wales as a whole cannot be underestimated.

In the five years I have worked closely with him he has given me tremendous support, firstly as Wales Team Manager, when he helped Wales go through a period of success that included a first win over South Africa included in 10 Test victories on the trot, and as a General Committee member.

As Chairman of the Union he helped bring the 1999 Rugby World Cup to Wales and through his business acumen set up contracts that will financially benefit the Welsh game enormously for years to come.

His contribution to Welsh rugby and Wales has been truly enormous.’
