Percy Montgomery, the Newport full back sent off in the Welsh Premiership match against Swansea at St Helens on 13 May, had a personal hearing before the Welsh Rugby Union Disciplinary Committee in Cardiff today (Tuesday, 3 June). The player was dismissed by referee Nigel Owens under Law 10.4.K – acts contrary to good sportsmanship.
The six-man Committee, chaired by Geraint Edwards, was addressed by the player, the player’s representative, Thomas Sheppard (Thrings Solicitors) and the match officials. David Watkins, the Newport RFC Chairman, attended as an observer.
Following the personal hearing the committee imposed a two-year ban, six months to be served immediately and the remaining 18 months suspended for two years, and a £15,000 fine.
A player right has the right of review of any sentence imposed but that must be accompanied by new evidence.
NB: The Welsh Rugby Union acts under the auspices of the International Rugby Board. The range of IRB sanctions under Law 10.4.K are 24 months to a life supension.
