Wales have regional trainers to thank

Wales conditioning coach Andrew Hore is looking forward to testing the squads fitness against the best sides in the world as they progress in Rugby World Cup.

He says his fitness sessions are now focussing on power and speed activities only, after a summer of hard work which has paid dividends to aerobic fitness.

And Hore puts much of the squad’s fitness prowess, which they showed off to great effect against Canada last week, down to the input of the player’s regional coaches and the new playing structure in Welsh rugby.

“The boys have worked so hard over the last 12 months that I am really looking forward, as I am sure the rest of the coaching staff are, to see how we go against the best in the world as we progress in the competition,” said Hore.

“The physical fitness of this side is not only my responsibility but also the team of regional trainers in Welsh rugby. And a lot of what we have achieved is a direct result of the combined efforts of myself and the former club trainers, who are now working with the regional sides.

“We have a fantastic working relationship that has developed over the last year and I attribute a lot of the gains we have all made to that relationship and the efforts of the regional trainers.”

In preparation for Wales’ second RWC match against Tonga on Sunday the squad have reigned in their gruelling training regime to concentrate on technical skills, strength and power development

“We are pulling back from the volume of conditioning work and making things shorter and sharper, with a greater emphasis on the technical skills of rugby,” added Hore.

“We are happy with where the players are at aerobically and anaerobically, and so we will now concentrate on strength and power development.

“The players have responded to our training environment at the Canberra Raiders. It is a very professional facility, and it has everything we need. Everything is on hand and close, which streamlines our training sessions which is great.

“The players are really comfortable here. I am sure we would all like to replicate this type of environment back home in our regions.”
