Four new caps were included in the Wales side with scrum half Paul John making a popular first appearance alongside his great friend, Neil Jenkins.
Gerwyn Wilkins made his only appearance on the wing with prop Ian Buckett, a North Walian who became a London barrister, and No 8 Steve Williams, playing in the pack.
It left only wing David Manley, then with Pontypridd, as the sole uncapped player in the tour party to the South Sea Islands. He was unfortunate to never gain a cap.
The match was error-strewn with Jenkins placing four first-half penalties and two more in the second spell. Tonga also failed to score other than through penalty goals.
It was the fifth consecutive away win for Wales and the ninth victory in ten matches. Skipper Ieuan Evans on the right wing was in charge for a 12th success, thereby equalling the record of Billy Trew in the early 1900s.
Both skipper Feao Vunipola and his cousin Elise Vunipola turned out in season 2003-04 for the Caerphilly club and Kati Tuipulotu is playing with Narberth after spells at Dunvant, Neath and Ebbw Vale, whilst scrum half Manu Vunipola
played with Merthyr and Pontypool.
