The club, who in the 1960’s had three British Lions – Alun Pask, Haydn Morgan and Allan Lewis – playing regularly for them and whom international scrum half Rupert Moon began his Welsh career with, simply could not raise a side this season.
Abertillery’s greatest moment on the field was possibly when they drew 3-3 with the Australian tourists of 1908, while in 1957 they joined with Ebbw Vale in defeating the Wallabies.
Secretary David Mason called it: “A sad day. Our members met and and it was a 100 per cent decision that we could just not carry on. Players will not play unless they are paid and fewer youngsters are now playing rugby.”
It is the first time that the club have failed to fulfil fixtures and they will attempt to play a few friendly matches under coach Les Edwards and them hope to return to bottom division rugby next season.
