In fact, it was the equalising try and Neil Jenkins faced an awkward conversion, but no Welshman watching thought for one moment that the great right boot of Jenks would miss. He duly struck it straight down the middle for victory – the last one gained by Wales over England.
Tom Jones and Max Boyce were on the pitch to give Wales fans the right start, but England were favourites and it took six Jenkins penalties to keep Wales in touch as England led 25-18 at the interval.
Shane Howarth scored and Jenkins converted, but Jonny Wilkinson, then a young centre, hit over two penalties to make it 31-25 with injury time looming.
When referee Andre Watson carded Tim Rodber for a high tackle, Wales put the kick downfield. From the last lineout the ball went to the flying Gibbs,who danced in the best Gene Kelly style as he waltzed past defender after defender and flew over the England goalline.
The crowd went mad. It was one of the greatest moments in Welsh and even rugby history and the incredible Jenkins lifted the roof with his 22nd point of the match.
