North Wales seniors players host to Central Wales in the first of two welsh trial matches. Central started the strongest with some excellent running in the loose by Wales Development number 8 Emma Philips and prop Ruth Copeland. They were rewarded with a try for Phillips, the first of a hatrick. North Wales, stunned by the intensity of Central’s play, replied soon after with a well worked move off a dominant scrum which resulted in a try for Welsh U19 International Elen Evans (Dolgellau). This was converted by Kate Jones (Caernarfon). International Lowri Jones (Bala), put in an excellent display of angled running and big defence, which was rewarded with a try for her, this was also converted by Kate Jones. Central strung together a barrage of attacks which resulted in Phillip’s second, who will have impressed selectors with her powerful running. Half time saw the North backs come into their own, with fullback Evans scoring an outstanding try from a chip over Central’s defence by scrum half Lois Griffiths (Bala). Evans scored again not long after, injecting pace and an excellent angle into the back line. Central responded with Phillips third try after great support play from Ester Eckley (Llandaff North) and good build up work by Hannah Szigetvari. The north came back after some quality lineout driving by Louise Akers (Dolgellau) and good link play by Kylie Wilson (Caernarfron) resulted in a well earned try for Welsh International Lowri Jones (Bala). The final score was 31-19 to North Wales.
North Wales U13 played a closely fought contest with a strong West Wales team who opened the scoring just before half time. This was followed up by excellent play from the West pack, which resulted in another try. The North replied by a try from outstanding prospect Elin Jones (Pwhelli). The final moments saw the game being played form end to end, with strong running from Ellen Jones (Nant Conwy) and Yasmin Leung (Caernarfon). But the West had the last say in a game that ended 4-1 to West Wales.
