The team is coached by Thobile Dunjwa and will be captained by Eastern Province’s Nomsebenzi Tsotsobe, who led the SA President’s XV in a one-off encounter against England Development last season.

SARFU president Brian van Rooyen said the event marked a milestone in the history of rugby in the country. “The announcement of the first women’s national team will go down as an important event in the history of our game in South Africa.” Said Van Rooyen.

“The women of South Africa have now taken our game to new heights. I am pleased that our plan to take part in the Women’s World Cup in 2006 is taking shape. We laid the foundation when we started with women’s rugby in the year 2001 launching on National Women’s Day.”
