Jenkins’ Joy At Celtic Crown

Gareth Jenkins admitted winning the Celtic League was more than just consolation for Llanelli’s Heineken Cup disappointment.

The Scarlets had targeted European glory before falling short against Biarritz at the quarter-final stage.

But Jenkins’ men, inspired by Stephen Jones in his last game for the club, returned to winning ways by becoming the first Welsh side to be crowned Celtic champions.

Jenkins said: “Sport is all about winning things and measuring yourself against success. We set out to win both the Heineken Cup and Celtic League, not out of arrogance but because those were our realistic aims.

“We fell short on one but we achieved another and for that we are very proud. During the season we have maintained our credibility and respect and maintained the team’s proud association with success.”

Lifting the new Celtic League trophy in front of their own fans was also the perfect send off for an emotional Jones, having kicked 18 points and created the game’s crucial first try, before he leaves to join Montferrand in France.

Jenkins continued: “It was a fitting conclusion to his career at Stradey Park. He came here as a smiling 18-year-old and hasn’t stopped since, and I’m sure he will never forget this occasion.”
