The Welsh Women’s Rugby Team beat the Springboks 15-16 in yesterday’s final test at the Loftus Securicor Stadium in Pretoria to become the first every Welsh rugby team to complete a successful test series in South Africa. Catrin Edwards opened the scoring for Wales in the first twenty minutes but South Africa kicked a penalty before half time to leave the scores 5-3 at the break.
Full back Elen Evans added Wales’ second try to stretch the Welsh lead but two Springbok tries within four minutes left Wales trailing 10-15 with twenty minutes remaining. Awen Thomas kicked a penalty with ten minutes left on the clock but despite chances Wales could not regain the lead.
In the dying minutes of the second half, Wales were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and Awen Thomas stepped forward. The kick went straight between the posts to finish the game in dramatic style, with Wales winning by just one point, 15-16.
Hannah Szigetvari, Eirlys Lougher and Rachel Brown all received their first caps, with Hannah Szigetvari becoming the youngest player to play for Wales at just 17-years and 126 days old.
The Welsh squad fly home today having made Welsh Rugby history.
