The course, held over two evenings this week saw senior squad members Esther Eckley and Philippa Tuttiet, Welsh Under 19’s Gemma Williams and Megan York and Welsh Under 16 players Kirsty Lewis and Sophie Wilkinson learning about the coaching process which includes modules on effective coaching, tackling and contact skills, decision making and backline organisation, scrummaging, lineouts and mini rucks and mauls.
The majority of the 16 coaches taking part on the course were from Llandaff North Rugby club due to their expanding women and girls section.
WWRU Director of rugby Richard Hodges commented, “Llandaff North had a need to qualify more coaches because of their growth in the women and girls game. The WWRU were delighted to run a course with them within their club. It’s great to see that some of our international players are taking the challenge of becoming coaches. They have a wealth of experience and are superb role models for the players of the future.”
The WRU has a comprehensive coach development programme and these newly qualified Preliminary coaches can now gain experience in their clubs before moving on to their Level 1 coaching awards.
