MCBRYDE HANGS UP HIS BOOTS
“The decision wasn’t an easy one, but one that had to be made,” said the Scarlets hooker. “Although the operation has been a success relieving the symptoms down my right arm, what cannot be ignored is the wear and tear in the discs above where the operation took place, which means that at best my neck would be unpredictable if I went back to full time rugby.
“I have therefore chosen to put my health first and hang up my boots.
“The club and the region have been fantastic to me over the years and have left me with some great memories, and I thank everyone that has supported me throughout my career.”
A loyal servant to both Llanelli and more recently the Scarlets, Robin has played 250 games since his first appearance on October 1st 1994 against Cardiff at the Arms Park, and has formed the heart of the Scarlet pack ever since.
“Robin has been a great ambassador to Llanelli, the Scarlets and Wales, and has deserved every honour in the game,” said Scarlets Chief Executive Stuart Gallacher. “His total commitment and professional outlook inspired everyone that came in contact with him. We are disappointed with, but fully understand his decision to retire.”
“Robin has been the ultimate professional,” added Scarlets Director of Rugby Gareth Jenkins. “An emotional player with hard attitudes he has always been fully aware of the hard work needed to bring the success he has achieved.
“A proud North Walian and perfect role model for young players within the region.”
However, Robin will be no stranger to Stradey Park as he continues as coach to the Scarlets Regional U18 as they prepare to embark on a new season in the WRU Reebok Regional Championships as defending Champions.
