With six wins and a draw from eight games, Cwmllynfell are emerging as the big threat to Bonymaen’s Division 1 aspirations this season, and impressed plenty of onlookers with a 32-10 demolition of Caerphilly at Bryn Park on Saturday.
Coach Mike Lewis said his side should have an unbeaten record this season, but an “awful performance” at Ystrad Rhondda in September took care of that.
“We were absolutely awful,” he said. “I don’t think we’ll ever play like that again! No disrespect to Ystrad Rhondda, but we handed it to them.
“I was pleased with our efforts against Caerphilly – it was a good win for us. We work hard on attack and we’ve got some good ball-handlers and a lot of pace out there.”
With former Aberavon centre Paul Davis scoring the tries and fullback Peter Thomas kicking the points, Cwmllynfell are starting to believe they have what it takes to knock unbeaten Bonymaen off their perch.
“We’re a young side and we’re learning all the time,” Lewis said. “We’re gelling well and it’s working on the field.
“The home game against Bonymaen in a fortnight is massive one for us. We’ve played the majority of the lower half of the table – it’s time to see where we are in this division.
“We know a lot of the Bonymaen players and it should be a cracking game. I just hope the sun’s out and the pitch is dry.”
Bonymaen’s march towards the title shows no sign of slowing down, however, with a 29-8 win over Builth Wells making it eight from eight this season.
Outside-half Gareth James banged over 14 points, with lock Chris Jenkins, centre Paul Smith and No 8 Alan Powell dotting down. The 21-point winning margin was impressive, considering Bonymaen played with 14 men after scrum-half Mark Davies’ first-half red card for fighting. Powell was yellow-carded in the dying stages, but Builth Wells couldn’t take advantage.
Elsewhere, Fleur de Lys fans finally had something to smile about as their side recorded their first win of the season. Right winger Romily Barnet scored the crucial try in a 10-8 home win over Waunarlwydd.
The victory relegates Blackwood – 14-11 losers at Llanharan – to the bottom of the table. Llanharan outside-half Wayne Jarvis kicked his third penalty goal deep into injury time to steal all the points.
Whitland are staying in touch in third place after their sixth win of the season – a 27-14 result at Ystrad Rhondda. Whitland ran in five tries in a dominant performance.
UWIC winger Nathan Trowbridge scored two of his club’s six tries in an entertaining 39-31 win over Llangennech, and Newbridge beat Beddau 9-5 with Greg Jones kicking all 9 points for the home side.
Merthyr locks Gareth Williams and Gethin Thomas both scored tries in a 19-10 win over fourth-placed Narberth, with scrum-half David Cambourne adding a third five-pointer.
