Winger Gareth Davey was the standout player in Abercynon’s 43-12 victory over Rhydyfelin as he scored a hat-trick in his first game back from injury. Abercynon were leading 43-0 as the clock ticked past the 80-minute mark, but the visitors sneaked over for two late tries.
In Division Three East, Abergavenny are making the running after an impressive 48-12 win at New Tredegar, but Risca are out of it after completing a “dirty dozen” of losses with a 30-6 mauling at third-placed Fairwater. Llanishen were beating Cwmbran 27-8 after an hour, but the game was abandoned when a Cwmbran player was taken to hospital with a head injury.
Treherbert are six points clear in Division Three South-East after an entertaining 38-24 win at home to Tylorstown, but second-placed Ynysybwl (29-18 victors over Hirwaun) have three games in hand. Garndiffaith and St Peters are on course for a winners-take-all match in Division Four East after compiling identical records at this stage of the season. Both clubs have 10 wins from 11 matches, with Garndiffaith beating struggling Crumlin 31-17 and St Peters shutting out bottom-placed Oakdale 29-0.
Division Four South-East leaders Penarth’s 49-0 win at Llandaff North – their third consecutive match without conceding a point – has set up a mouth-watering home clash with challengers Taffs Well next Saturday. Taffs Well’s match over winless Dinas Powys on Saturday was postponed. Machen remain one of the few clubs in Wales with a perfect record after a 22-0 result at Ynysddu, but Blaenavon’s 32-18 victory over St Joseph’s ensures a tight contest in Division Five East.
Unbeaten Porth’s 49-3 hammering of Ferndale cements their position at the top of the Division Five South East table, but the result of the day came at Rhiwbina, with the home side beating Deri 89-5. Rhiwbina outside-half Richard Saltmarsh scored 23 points, including two tries, with prop James Huntley, No 8 Gavin Harris, scrum-half Gerwyn Neale and centre Mark Lee also bagging try doubles.
