PRINCIPALITY PREMIERSHIP PREVIEW

The ex-Wales international has been replaced by once-capped England lock Alex Codling as previous benefactor Marcus Russell acts to increase his input into the club. Hayward’s surprise exit comes despite holiday derby wins against Pontypool and Newport and with the Steelmen moving up to 12th in the table. Codling, 32, has previous experience of the Welsh Premiership having spent two seasons with Neath although this is his first coaching role since his recent retirement through injury. The visit of the Welsh cup-holders to Eugene Cross Park is sure to be a baptism of fire for the young coach.

Glamorgan Wanderers play host to a Bridgend side who lost out to leaders Neath on New Years Eve. The Ravens slipped to third place on New Year’s Eve – as they were leap-frogged by Pontypridd – whilst the Wanderers registered a useful first win of the year over Bedwas.

At the Gnoll it’s first against second in the table as Neath clash with travelling Pontypridd. The Welsh All Blacks are living up to their nickname this season and look unstoppable after brushing aside the challenge of Bridgend last time out. But Ponty will relish the challenge and will look to consolidate second place with a game in hand over third-placed Bridgend.

At Llynfi Road Maesteg take on a Bedwas side still reeling from a 29-8 humbling at the hands of Glamorgan Wanderers in their last outing. The Old Parish will be encouraged by the exploits of their fellow top flight newcomers and will be keen to add Bedwas to their growing list of conquests this season.

Bottom-placed Carmarthen travel to Pontypool hoping to kick off the New Year with a win. The Quins will be desperate for three points as they prepare for a relegation battle whilst Pooler are just seven points ahead.

Second from bottom Cardiff welcome fourth-placed Aberavon to the Arms Park in a tie that only looks like going one way. Aberavon began the New Year with a 30-13 win over visiting Maesteg and look set to continue their winning start to the year.

Elsewhere, at St Helens Swansea take on Newport and Llandovery entertain Cross Keys at Church Bank.
