SUCCESS AT CAERPHILLY JUNIOR TAG AND TOUCH
Over 160 girls took part in the first round of competition during a girl’s rugby festival at Blackwood Comprehensive School. Pupils from Ystrad Mynach College, Blackwood, Risca, Lewis Girls, Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, Newbridge, St Martins and St Cenydd comprehensive schools battled for the top spots on Thursday 16th February.
James Chapron, the Caerphilly Council and WRU Rugby Development Officer, said: “We have seen some excellent rugby being displayed during the first round of the competition and I hope that more girls will choose to develop their skills.”
Sports Development Manager Dave Phenis stated, ” Girls rugby is becoming an increasingly popular sport and that has been demonstrated by the number of girls that are participating in festivals like these. Rugby can be played and enjoyed in a safe environment in a non-contact format and local clubs are seeing an encouraging take-up of the sport.”
Caerphilly Tigers, who train on Wednesday night at 5pm at St Cenydd Leisure Centre, have an Under 14s and an Under 17s team. Blackwood RFC is also looking to start an Under 14s and an Under 17s girls rugby team in Easter this year.
