ULSTER MOVE TO TOP OF CELTIC LEAGUE

The pick of the weekend’s games in the Celtic League was Friday evening’s meeting between leaders Munster and second placed Ulster at an all ticket Ravenhill. Ulster ran out 27-3 winners to grab top spot in the League in a one-sided match dominated by the home team. Injury ravaged Munster struggled to get into the game, while Ulster were powered by an inspirational display from ex-Wallaby second row Justin Harrison. The lock was everywhere, powerful in the loose and formidable in the line-out.

There were two other local derbies on Friday night with the Ospreys going down heavily, 40-14 at the Cardiff Blues while Glasgow Warriors were ambushed at home 8-20 by Border Reivers. At the Arms Park a hat-trick from Blues wing Chris Czekaj was the highlight of the game whilst outside half and man-of-the-match Nicky Robinson showed flashes of brilliance. Unfortunately the defending champions, Ospreys, looked badly out of sorts.

Border Reivers, with a fit again Gregor Townsend at stand-off, enjoyed their victory which put them ahead of their hosts in the hunt for a Heineken Cup spot for next season. The weekend’s final game saw Leinster retain their third place – but not without a struggle. They finally edged out bottom side Connacht 16-13, with Felipe Contepomi scoring all the Dublin side’s points, including a try. Coming back from being 3-6 down at the break,  Leinster had led 16-6 with 5 minutes left before an Andrew Mailei try, converted by Paul Warwick set up a nail biting finish.
