Leaders Bargoed, whose match against Llantwit Fardre was shifted to neighbouring Blackwood’s ground when Bargoed’s pitch became the centre of a murder investigation, stayed in front with a 47-15 win, but they have played two more games than Saracens. The Newport club beat Rumney 38-0, with winger Wesley Cunliffe scoring three tries, to set up a winner-takes-all clash with Bargoed next Saturday.
Brynmawr’s 26-8 home loss to Croesyceiliog means the division’s bottom club have only three games left to record their first League win of the season. Abergavenny have stumbled in their Division 3 East title quest, a 23-17 loss at Llanishen giving Pontypool United hope of a late-season charge. Outside-half Gareth Bailey-Jones scored a try double for the winners.
United beat Pontllanfraith 34-7 to narrow the margin at the top of the table to six points, with four matches to be played.
Ynysybwl have one hand on the Division 3 South-East title after their 37-7 win over Pentyrch. Nearest challengers Treherbert were held to an 8-all draw at Tonyrefail and now have an eight-point gap to close with only one game in hand over the leaders.
In Division 4 East, St Peters remain title favourites with a 42-5 win over Trinant. Winger James Stackman scored four of his club’s seven tries. Tredegar Ironsides produced one of the biggest wins of the day, running in nine tries in a 58-0 win over Cardiff HSOB.
Division 4 South-East champions-elect Penallta continued on their merry way with a 25-10 win over fourth-placed Bedlinog, and bottom-placed Dinas Powys avoided a 21st straight defeat this season when their match at Taffs Well was called off.
Machen will be crowned Division 5 East champions after seeing off nearest challengers 26-20 on Saturday. Paul Clarkson, Lloyd Williams and Darren Herbst scored tries for the winners, with Herbst adding a crucial six goals.
In Division 5 South-East, Cefn Coed sealed their runners-up spot behind champions Porth, and Rhiwbina beat Ferndale 19-0.
