WELSH CHALLENGE FOR TITLES

A second half try from winger Chris Czekaj, added to a first half score from Mike Phillips, proved crucial as the region equalled their Celtic League best of five successive victories, however defeat for the Dragons dented their push for an automatic qualification spot for next season’s Heineken Cup.

On Tuesday night, in front of a record crowd for the Celtic League of 15,183 the Ospreys scored their fourth consecutive home Celtic League win running out 25-13 victors over the Scarlets.

A fine performance from man of the match Jason Spice personified the Ospreys performance – but it was the boot of Gavin Henson which sealed the win – the centre kicking 20 points to add to their first half penalty try. The Scarlets countered with a Matthew Watkins try and eight points from the boot of Mike Hercus but were eclipsed by the strong Ospreys performance.

The Celtic League record attendance for a regular season game has now been broken 5 times in the current campaign – all since December – and at 15,183 is 50% up on the record crowd prior to the start of the season (10,500).  The seasonal average gate for Celtic League games has now exceeded 5,000 for the first time since the League’s inception.

The Celtic League awards a trophy for the Best Supported Club, won for the past two years by Ulster, but this season Ospreys are breathing down their neck, and with just two home games left apiece the race is on to see if the Welsh region can wrestle that title from the Ulstermen.
