The Borderers clinched a 17-3 win at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn to close move within a a point of second-placed Beddau, who have completed their fixtures, with one game remaining.

Full-back Lee Glanville scored the west Wales club’s hundredth try of the season before centre Gary Evans and scrum-half Andrew Jenkins followed.

But it was the forwards who lay the foundations for their 21st win of the campaign along with their water-tight defence that has proved the best in the league.

Team manager Frank Setaro said: “Finishing second would be a massive achievement for the club and something that no-body else believed we could do.

“Everyone thought we would be a mid-table side but the boys have really clicked since the New Year and now we’re really playing some good rugby.

“Newbridge came down here with a big pack but our forwards were magnificent and did the job to create tries for our backs while our defence was as good as ever. This certainly gives us all a lot of confidence for where the club is going.”

Whitland will face Caerphilly this week and will have noted the ease with which Bonymaen crushed the castletown club at the weekend.
Bonymaen continued their march to the Premiership in emphatic style with a thrilling 73-3 triumph at Virginia Park, running in 11 tries, two from Rhydian Gierat, with Gareth James adding nine conversions against hapless Caerphilly.

Merthyr remain fifth after edging an eight-try thriller at Llangennech with Ross Coombes, Chris James, Thomas James, Jason Price and Ryan Harris all scoring.

Fleur de Lyn ended a hugely disappointing season on a high with a 29-23 win after surviving a second-half comeback by the students of Uwic. Nathan Jenkins scored one of Fleur’s five tries and added two conversion to claim only their seventh win of the season and move 13 points clear of bottom side Ystrad Rhondda who suffered an agonisingly defeat at Blackwood.

James Davies and Christian Rees both scored for Ystrad but were denied only a fourth league win by two tries by Blackwood’s David James. Narberth comfortably beat Builth Wells 37-7 in the league only remaining game.
