The Ospreys clinched a thrilling 18-7 win at Edgeley Park following tries from Steve Tandy and Stefan Terblanche. Yet victory was not enough without a bonus point to send the Welsh region into the last eight of Europe for the first time.

Jones said: “Winning at Sale was a big result and that’s very pleasing but it’s hugely frustrating that it’s still not enough to go through. We’ve only lost one game in this competition so failing to qualify is hard to take.

“It was a big effort from our boys, they put their bodies on the line as if their lives depended upon it. We came here to win and that’s exactly what we did. We started with a bang and then our defence was magnificent. I couldn’t have asked for more from the players.”
