Morgan is keen to be involved

Several blockbuster performances for the Cardiff Blues in the Magners League have earned the burly flanker a Wales call-up, but the second-row convert has little preference where he plays for his country.

Having first been chosen by Steve Hansen for the extended squad to train for the 2002 Six Nations, the 28-year-old has endured a five year wait for his next Wales call-up from new coach Gareth Jenkins.

Morgan said: “Gareth is looking at me as a middle line-out option and possibly as a second-row, but, to be honest, I don’t care where I play for Wales – as long as it’s not tight-head prop.

“It’s been a dream come true,” he said, “I missed out in 2002 because of injury, so this was my first time in the Wales squad. I am loving every minute, it’s great to be involved.”

While a place in Jenkins’s Six Nations squad is every Welshman’s dream, Morgan insists a place in the match day 22-man squad is his main aim. The former Neath and Llanelli lock only returned to Wales last summer from Leeds Tykes after the Guinness Premiership outfit were relegated and is loving every minute of being back in the Principality with the Blues.

“It’s one thing to make the training squad, but another to be involved on match day,” said Morgan. “It would be amazing to play for Wales, especially against Ireland at the Millennium Stadium. My family, especially my wife and parents, are really pleased because they know how hard I have worked for this.

“It’s the icing on the cake; I know the Heineken Cup campaign wasn’t too hot, but the Blues haven’t had a bad season – we have turned over some big sides. To beat the likes of Wasps and Saracens in the EDF Energy Cup and reach the semi-finals has been superb.”
