Lewis twice visited Czekaj in a private Brisbane hospital on Monday and was delighted to find the young Blues star in good spirits following an operation to piece back together his broken femur.
“Gareth Jenkins and Alan Phillips went to see Chris on Sunday before the Wales team left and then I went in to see him on Monday. I got Cardiff Blues Chief Executive Rob Norster on the phone to speak to him and he knows that both club and country are supporting him in every way possible,” said Lewis.
“It was obvious from the start that it was a bad injury and as soon as we got word of the extent of the damage the ARU President, Paul MacLean, got on the phone to the top surgeon and arranged for him to meet Chris at the hospital.
“Everything was cleared for Chris to receive the best possible medical attention and he is in great hands. The operation went well and his girlfriend will be joining him this week to give him support.
“Her trip and accommodation have been arranged by the WRU, but one of the doctors at the hospital has very kindly given them the opportunity to use her beachside house to recuperate before they fly home in around two weeks time.
“It will take Chris that time to overcome the operation and be in a fit condition to fly. In the meantime, the WRU will be closely monitoring his progress via the Australian medical team.”
Czekaj is facing up to a year out of the game after breaking his leg in the first half of last weekend’s 31-0 defeat in Brisbane.
