Dai Rees’s side beat France 28-12 and Italy 43-0 to make it through to the last eight of the main competition on the back of their success in reaching the cup semi-finals last weekend at Twickenham.
Wales lost their opening pool game at Murrayfield to Samoa 21-14 but came out strong to overcome France with tries from Aled Thomas, James Merriman, Lee Williams and Martyn Thomas, Dragons outside half Thomas converting all four. Italy beat France setting up a winner-takes-all final pool game but Jonathan Edwards and his men were clinical, scoring seven tries in all.
Rees said: “Our goal this season was to finish in the last eight in at least three tournaments, a goal which we have now achieved. Today’s results mean that we will end the IRB Sevens season as one of the top eight competing countries.
“It was great to pick up eight trophies on the trot but we will settle for quarter final and semi final places every time.”
Wales will probably play Fiji at 12.13pm in the first Cup quarter-final of Day Two tomorrow (Sunday). All the action can be seen on BBC via the red button.
