Mountain Ash had their unbeaten start to their Division Two East season brought to an abrupt halt as they crashed for the first time 20-16 at Tredegar.

Both sides crossed for two tries, with Tredegar winger Daniel Davies accounting for both his side’s efforts and Richard Evans and Scott Davies replying for the visitors.

But it was the goal kickers who settled it as a conversion apiece from Tredegar’s Daryl Carter and Gareth Kearney made the difference.

Three unbeaten records remained intact, though, as Penallta took a bonus-point 22-10 win away from their trip to bottom club Llanishen. Ystrad Rhondda matched that feat in winning 28-14 away at Ynysybwl, while Abercynon survived a scare at Rhydyfelin before finally scraping through 14-13.

Elsewhere, Treherbert triumphed 12-3 at Builth Wells and, in an entertaining derby match between Pill Harriers and Newport HSOB, it was the Old Boys took the spoils, coming through 38-25 for a bonus point.

Second played third in Division Three East as Brynmawr hosted Pontypool United. And it was second placed Brynmawr who justified their league position with a convincing 24-9 victory, albeit missing out on a bonus point.

The home side ran in two tries through scrum half Richard Addis and second row Damien Hudd with fly half Matthew Bow adding the extras.

Meanwhile, leaders Abergavenny ensured that it would remain even-stevens at the top by beating Nelson 20-6. They too missed out on a bonus point though, scoring only three tries through James Harris, Will Johnson and Stuart Davies.

At the bottom, both Blaina and Senghenydd  were searching for their first win and it was Blaina who prevailed, coming through for a 22-17 victory and a bonus point to boot.

In Division Four, Gwernyfed and Nantyglo refused to concede ground on one another at the top as both recorded away victories at Abercarn and Machen respectively. Abertillery also remained in touching distance as fullback Darren Miles scored all the points in a hard-fought 10-7 win over Rhiwbina.

In Division Five, Caldicot and Blaenavon capitalised on top side Crumlin’s week off, as both recorded victories while in Division Six Beaufort smashed St Julian’s 53-0.
