It was Pooler who capitalised on home advantage to ease past their visitors 20-0. The students were never allowed into their stride by the wily Pontypool outfit and Head Coach Chris Davey will be hugely disappointed that they ultimately failed to register a single point.
Pontypool, led from the front by talisman Cae Trayherne, owed the victory to the graft of their pack who were justly rewarded with tries for flanker Ben Salt and another for Trayharne himself.
Pooler’s joy was enhanced at news of third placed Beddau’s surprise home loss to Blackwood who walked away with a 27-20 bonus point vicoty with Brendan Lampitt and Adam Cope amongst the tries.
Elsewhere in the East, Caerphilly breezed past Fleur De Lys 29-0 at Virginia Park, where fullback Nathan Gittins crossed five minutes into injury time to secure a bonus point, while there were first wins too for Rumney, who pipped Llanharan 17-15 at the Dairy Field, and Llantrisant who overcame Bargoed 26-24 with Jason Alford kicking 16 points.
Tonmawr sent out a further warning to their rivals in Division One West with an effortless 45-0 victory at home to Waunarlwydd. Ton romped in for seven tries with fullback Gareth Morris strolling over for three and flanker Dean Fitzgerald also claimed a brace while fly half Austin Howells converted five.
Second place Bonymaen lost ground on the leaders despite winning 22-6 away at Corus. They were only able to score only one try through Chris Jenkins in the win with Alan Richards accounting for the remainder of the points with four penalties and conversion and a drop-goal.
In other matches, Paul Arnold crossed for the only try of match as Carmarthen Quins edged passed Merthyr 11-9 to remain in third while there were also wins for Llangennech who won at Bridgend Athletic 19-13, Narberth also recorded an away win, 16-11 at Dunvant, and Whitland who had to much for Cwmllynfell coming through 18-11.Â
