Round Up: National League One

A nerveless last gasp penalty from UWIC’s Tom Hancock saw table topping Pontypool defeated for only the second time this season in a pulsating encounter at the Cyncoed Campus.

The students revelled in the dry conditions and were deserved half-time leaders as they turned around 10-5 up after a Matt MacLean try and five points from the boot of Hancock.

Pooler came out fighting in the second half though and a try from Phil Price, to add to an earlier touchdown from the evergreen Cae Trayherne, saw them level the scores at 15 apiece. It was Hancock though who had the last laugh and his penalty sealed an 18-15 triumph which has opened the Division One East title race right up.

Elsewhere in the East, 13 points from the boot of Steve Robinson saw Beddau steal a dramatic 23-22 victory at Llantrisant.

The visitors were outscored by four tries to two as Tom Botwood (2), Hugh Davies and Robert Davies all went over for Llantirsant with Beddau replying through Nathan Walters and James Balfrey. Robinson’s five successful kicks proved the difference though and secured his side a nail-biting win.

There were also away wins for Llanharan, who defeated Rumney 23-12 at Riverside Park, and Caerphilly who came through 23-17 at Fleur De Lys with Gary Davies and Chris Thomas claiming the tries.

In the West, Corus now have realistic hopes of avoiding the drop as they moved of the bottom with a terrific 10-6 away win at Bonymaen. After trailing 6-0 at the break, Chris Macdonald scored the only try of the match and Rhodri Milson added a penalty and a conversion to take the match and move their side closer to safety.

Corus’s place at the foot of the table was taken by Waunarlwydd who were on the end of James Horner masterclass at Dunvant, as the fly half notched a full house of scores in a 32-10 victory.

Horner scored a try, three conversions, a penalty and a dropped goal in the match to finish with a haul of 17 points, while scrum half Ieuan Evans, winger Lyndon Johnson and centre Peter Smith completed the scoring.

There were also wins for Merthyr, 34-32 over Carmarthen Quins, Llangennech, who beat Bridgend Athletic 24-16 and Cwmllynfell who triumphed 15-6 at home to Whitland.
