Wales hooker Huw Bennett has withdrawn from the two-Test tour to South Africa in June with an ankle injury.

Bennett left the field early after making an appearance for Shane Williams’s testimonial XV against a Justin Marshall select XV at the Millennium Stadium last Saturday and was immediately sent for medical tests.

“After consultation this morning we can confirm Huw will not be fit enough to join the South Africa tour party,” said Wales Team Physiotherapist Mark Davies.

“We know he won’t travel due to the ligament damage he has sustained to his left ankle, but are awaiting further test results to determine precisely how long he will be in recovery.”

Bennett’s Ospreys colleague Richard Hibbard has been called in to train with the Wales squad currently in camp in preparation for the Springboks, although he has not yet been confirmed as a replacement to tour the home of the current World Champions.
