The lock who turned 34 last week made his Neath debut way back in 1993, has played for Llanelli RFC and was a key part of the Newport side that clinched the league titles in 2003/04.
Since returning to the Gnoll from Rodney Parade, Martin has captained the Welsh All Blacks for two seasons and won a record four Prinicipality Premiership titles and, last, season the double when he raised the Konica Minolta Cup. Martin is the onlyu semi-professional player to pick up five league winners medals.
He said: “Due to an persistent ankle injury, I have been advised to retire. At the start of pre season I still felt I could contribute to the squad with my experience, but with the medical advice and the reaction in training with my ankle, I must concede that the demands to play at this level are too much.
Â
“I’ve spoken the Rowland and Patrick and though disappointed they were supportive and understood my decision to retire. May I take this opportunity too thank the players & coaches (past and present) whom I have played with in my career.Â

“In the 15 years that I have been associated with Neath RFC there have been many high and lows. I have made many friends in this time and it’s the players I will miss most. The club are heading in the right direction, have great vision in Rowland, Pat, Arwel and Lee Beach, I wish the boys well in the coming season. It was fitting to have my final appearance against St David’s whom I made my debut for Neath back in 1993.”

Director of Rugby Rowland Phillips commented: “Steve Martin has been a fantastic player for Neath Rugby over the years and we are truly sorry to see him leave. However he will always be a part of this club and im sure I can speak for the coaching staff and players in saying that I look forward to seeing him supporting us at the Gnoll during the season.”
