Jones said: “There’s a long way to go in the season and Tonmawr will catch us unless we start scoring more tries. Tonmawr have been massive this season and are scoring eight or nine tries a game, we need to start doing that too to pick up bonus points.Â
“We are very happy to be top of the table but this is a two horse race and they’re scoring tries and we’re not. They gave away too many penalties today but they’re still a very good side.”Â
Meanwhile Carmarthen Athletic went third with a 41-21 win against bottom side Dunvant, who remain without a win this season and Narberth had to cling on to edge out Llangennech in a gripping 38-31 win, after leading 27-0 at half-time.
Bargoed are the new leaders of Division One East, but they had to stage a dramatic comeback to beat bottom of the league Newport Saracens 32-28. Greg Gallon and Danny Jones each got two second half tries for Bargoed to leave Newport without a win and bottom of the table.Â
Merthyr slipped into second as they lost 24-16 to fourth-placed Blackwood. Two second-half tries from Mark Birkey sealed the win for Blackwood who dominated throughout. Llanharan were the big scorers of the day, running in seven tries away at Rumney in a 43-5 victory. Newbridge kept up the pressure at the top with a narrow 34-28 win over the students of UWIC.Â
Each side grabbed four tries a piece and in a thrilling game.Â
In the other games Ystrad Rhonnda picked up a bonus point in their 22-7 victory against Beddau and strugglers Penalta lost 19-15 away at Caerphilly.
