Plenty to work on, says Gatland

Wales coach Warren Gatland may have watched his side score four tries in the 26-13 win over Scotland, but he knows that a successful defence of the RBS Six Nations will not come easily.

Gatland’s Wales showed flashes of the brilliance that took them to Grand-Slam glory in the win in Edinburgh, with new recruits Jamie Roberts and Leigh Halfpenny impressing, but he said, “We’re happy with the result and the way we’ve started the campaign but there’s plenty for us to work on for next week.

“We said at half-time it was a game for us to lose and not for Scotland to win. We showed some nice touches and scrummaged really well.

“I thought Jamie Roberts had his best game for Wales in midfield and he posed Scotland big problems. It’s great that we are developing our strength in depth.

“Although we put ourselves under pressure and we lost momentum, we’re in a nice position as a coach because we’ve got things to work on and improve.”

Skipper Martin Williams added, “It’s a strange feeling in the dressing room, We feel a bit flat because we took our foot off the gas.

“We gave penalties away and lost our discipline and it was difficult to get the momentum back.

“The front five have not got the credit they deserve over last 12 months but they gave us the platform to win the game.

“It’s my first win as captain and it gets that monkey off my back. It was a blow to lose Ryan so late on but we all stepped up. Six days is a tough turnaround before we face England but we’ve got strength in depth.”
