Roberts set to send pulses pacing

Jamie Roberts reckons he will set pulses racing again when Wales face arch rivals England in Cardiff.

Trainee doctor Roberts produced a storming man-of-the-match performance for the defending Six Nations champions in the thumping win over Scotland.

Roberts keeps his place at centre for Saturday’s Red Rose clash with Wales star Gavin Henson remaining on the sidelines with a calf strain.

Now the Cardiff Blues giant, standing at 6ft 4ins and 16st 10lbs, insists he will pass his latest examination with flying colours to boost the dragons’ bid for back-to-back Six Nations titles.

Roberts, 22, said: “The expectation is there from the Welsh public and the players and coaches have to deal with it.

“We know the standard we have set as we played some fantastic rugby against Scotland.

“But we switched off the second half and we know we can’t afford to do that against England.

“We’ve got things to work on and a quick turnaround to deal with but I’m just looking forward to the game. Bring on England.”

Wales start as red-hot favourites for the Millennium Stadium clash having won their previous two home championship meetings over Martin Johnson’s men thanks to match-winning displays from golden boys Henson and James Hook.

In that time, the Dragons have delivered two Grand Slams while England have not won the Six Nations since 2003 when Johnson was skipper.

Prop Gethin Jenkins said: “It’s unusual for us to be favourites against England and it’s a different pressure to have.

“The expectation has risen because we’re playing well and we have to use the pressure and turn it into confidence on the field.

“But we’re wary of England. They were scrappy against Italy but still managed to score five tries.

“Games between the two nations are normally close – we won’t take them lightly.”
