The Welsh squad joined the top six group winners along with the best placed runners-up in the RWC Sevens Cup quarter finals. Wales were the second placed of the runners-up and as a result will face New Zealand in the first of the Cup quarter finals tomorrow.
The RWC quarter final line-up also sees England taking on the big hitting Samoans while South Africa tackle Argentina and Kenya play Fiji.
Wales’ bid to top their group foundered in their final pool match after losing 14-0 to Argentina in a competitive match that tested both sides to the full. But in the it was the Pumas who had the firepower and pace to score two winning tries and the tight defence to keep Wales at bay.
A try by their record sevens scorer Santiago Gomez Cora and the conversion by Martin Rodriguez put Wales on the back foot but Argentina were unable to add to the points tally in the remainder of the first half.
Wales tried everything to break down what was a very aggressive Argentine defence but there was no way through for the men in red.
Frustration was then further increased when Argentina broke clear once again to score through Gonzalo Camancho, Rodriguez again converting for the final points of the game and a 14-0 win for his side.
The result means that Wales finished second in their group and had to wait on other results before proceeding to the last eight of the Cup competition.
Wales beat New Zealand in their last meeting, at the Wellington Sevens, a result coach Gordon Tietjens’ side will be keen to reverse at the Sevens Stadium tomorrow.
