Wales seeking to regroup

Wales Sevens head coach Paul John is looking forward to the Adelaide Sevens this weekend and hopes his young side can build from their performances at Hong Kong.

Wales finished as Plate semi-finalists in Hong Kong, with 10 changes from their squad that lifted the Melrose Cup as Rugby World Cup Sevens winners at the start of the month.

In the Australian leg of the IRB Sevens series, Wales will face New Zealand, Tonga and USA in a gruelling Pool schedule.

John said, “I was really pleased with the performances of our young side on the weekend. Ifan Evans did well in his first tournament, and it was another opportunity for youngsters like Rhys Webb and Will Harries to gain in experience and exposure to this level of rugby. Hong Kong is a fantastic tournament and all the players would have learned a huge amount.

“We practically started from scratch after the World Cup in terms of the squad make-up, but the situation gave us a chance to blood new players and give others more experience.

“The games against China and Japan were much more difficult and physical than most people would expect and we were extremely pleased with our second half performance against England, coming back from 26-0 down at half-time to finish 26-19 with tries from Aaron Bramwell, Ifan Evans and Jimmy Norris in the second half.

“We have a very tough group in Australia, with all three sides in our pool providing tough challenges, but we will work on our recovery this week before some light training to build up to the tournament itself.”
