Bridgend had already claimed the Webb Ellis Cup in April but they had to battle hard to gain their second national youth trophy of the season.
Both teams played the match in an excellent spirit and with a high tempo but it was a low scoring affair in which determined defence generally nullified the attacks launched regularly by both teams.
Scrum half Tom Davies kicked a penalty to give Bridgend Athletic Youth an early lead before Josh Lewis replied with a well struck penalty.
Bridgend Athletic Youth regained the lead with another penalty from the assured boot of scrum half Davies but once again Lewis levelled the scores.
Just before half time Bridgend Athletic Youth gained the score that was to prove vital and the difference between the teams. Full back Michael Hathaway glided through the Merthyr defence to score the only try of the match. That try was improved by the conversion kicked by Davies.
In a hard and uncompromising second half Merthyr Youth gradually built spme momentum which led to them taking camp in the Bridgend Athletic Youth half.
Despite their huge efforts the team from the Blues region could not penetrate the well organised defence of the Bridgend Athletic team and neither team added to their first half scores.
Despite that the two teams presented an exciting contest for those present, a crowd of over 600.
At the end of the match Ben Howe, the Bridgend Athletic Youth captain, lifted the RAF Careers League trophy.
* The DC Thomas Cup was shared between Llanelli Schools Under 11s and Cardiff Schools Under 11s who fought out a 0-0 draw.
