Gatland: “We still have work to do”

Wales head coach Warren Gatland admits his side still have work to do until he is really happy, but winning the match against Scotland in such dramatic fashion was thrilling, even for someone of his experience

Wales coach Warren Gatland said: “That was one of the most amazing games I’ve been involved in either as a player or a coach. It was a great advert for the game.

“There is still a lot to work on especially our start to games which is an area of concern. We weren’t happy with the first half display but when you play high risk rugby, you’re going to make mistakes.

“But to come back the way we did was a real test of character and the guys never gave up.

“We put pressure on ourselves by trying to play too much rugby and conceding turnovers. The frustrating thing was that we made breaks but they slowed things up at the rucks and it was very difficult for us to get quick ball.

“But there’s a lot to work on. But I’ve been on the receiving end of one-point defeats so it’s nice to be on the other side.

“I’m sure Scotland will be hugely disappointed, they came to play rugby and it was a great game.

“We felt when Dan Parks kicked the drop goal that it could be costly but the guys never gave up, worked hard and the people coming off the bench made a real impact.”

Skipper Ryan Jones added: “This will give us a lot of confidence as well as some peace for the next few days. We still need to look at ourselves and cut out the silly mistakes.

“This game showed the character of the team, that we will never lie down and always bounce back. Gone are the days when we will just lie down and accept stuff. We will play and fight for 80 minutes because it’s not over until it’s over.”
