Fifty-one year old Dee Evans didn’t take up the sport until she was 38 but after 13 years of playing rugby she has decided to hang up her boots.
She retired after being part of the Waunarlwydd side which claimed the WRU National Plate final in a closely fought encounter against Seven Sisters.
Her playing career began at Vadre before she moved on to Barry. Moving back west she then played for Tycroes, Morriston, Birchgrove and then made her best move to Waunarlwydd.
Karen Samuel, Waunarlwydd captain, praised Dee’s commitment and paid tribute to her versatility – she may have finished her career as a hooker but she’s play in nearly every other position on the field as well.
WRU Women’s Community rugby manager Nicola Smith said: “Dee decided to retire after the Plate competition due to insurance but since finding out that she is actually covered up to the age of 55 I wonder how long it will be before she is tempted to take the field again?
“Dee is an inspiration to all those women who would love to play our national sport but think they are too old. Never,” added Nicola.
