WALES IN NZ: Players reaction

Head coach Warren Gatland said he will consider changing the side so that more Welsh players can get used to the pace and pressure of top class international rugby.

Gatland said: “A lot of our players will have learnt massive amounts and for a long spell of the game we put them under a lot of pressure.

“The last thing we want to do tomorrow is get on a plane and go home to Wales. We want to play them again next week.

“We will consider changing the side so that other members of the squad get a chance to experience the pace and pressure of playing against the All Blacks. These are the sort of games we want.

“I thought that the way we played in the first half we put the All Blacks under a lot of pressure, but they were amazing in the second half. There were a lot of turnovers and they punished us.

“Playing well for 50 minutes wasn’t good enough and we have to maintain the same intensity for eighty minutes. I have got no complaints with the result.

”This was not a step backwards. I have already received texts from people in Wales saying the first fifty minutes was one of the best we have produced.”

Wales Captain Ryan Jones said: “I thought we were superb first half and then we got pinged in the second. We can’t give up, pack up and go home, we’ve got to show a lot of character now.”

New cap Tavis Knoyle said he had mixed feelings about the game because the honour of playing for Wales was tinged with disappointment over the result.

He said: “It is such an honour to play for your country, but the experience was quite weird for me.

“It was very disappointing to have lost like that. We have been training so well and were hopeful of a much better result. We know it will come and we are not far away.”

Giant lock Bradley Davies said: “Once they get their momentum New Zealand are very difficult to beat. We are very disappointed but we’ve got to learn and hopefully put it right for next week.

“I’m sure we’ll pick ourselves up next week and give it our best shot.

“For me I just want to keep the jersey and keep going. We have always prided ourselves on our set pieces and our lineout was better and the scrums were awesome.”

Stephen Jones added: “They are a great attacking outfit.

“From our perspective we are disappointed we allowed them to play so well in the second half.

“Dan Carter is a great player and he played very well against us. Fortunately we have two Tests. We’ll work hard this week and we’ll make sure we get better.”
