Ponty retained their unbeaten start to the season but had to work hard to secure a 20-18 win at home against Carmarthen Quins while Swansea had to withstand a spirited challenge by Newport before prevailing 20-38.

Ponty led the Quins 8-6 at the break with Darren Waters scoring the only try of the half with James Stephenson banging over two penalties for Quins

Dafydd Lockyer and Adam Thomas looked to have put Ponty clear but Quins hit back through Ryan Llywellyn and Andrew Banfield. Quins could have snatched a last gasp draw but Stephenson’s conversion hit the post and rebounded clear.

Swansea saw Nicky Thomas and Sam Kiley cross early before Alex Clatworthy and Matthew Morgan raced over to put the visitors clear with Newport’s only response coming courtesy of Andrew Brown.

James Leadbetter and Gareth Champman reduced the arrears further but late efforts by replacement hooer Ollie Pardoe and Morgan’s second try made the game safe for Swansea.

Pontypool put Glamorgan Wanderers to the sword, racing over for nine tries as the Wanderers begin to contemplate where their first win is going to come from, having conceded 160 points in their first three games of the season.

Down 54-3 the Wanderers showed a brief spell of determination, scoring a bonus point for four tries with Mike Hurley, Reuben Tucker, Rory Budina and Tomos Marks scoring five pointers before Rhys Buckley scored for Pooler.

Geraint O’Driscoll kicked eight conversions with Andrew Quick, Dan Robinson (2), Max Woodward, Mike Burke (2) and Luke Dyckhoff and Tom Hancock also scoring for the winners.

For the second week running, champions Neath had to work hard for their 16-9 win over Cross Keys while Llanelli pulled off a 26-23 victory at Cardiff. Aberavon squeaked home 25-24 against Bedwas while Tonmawr recorded their first win of the season with a 31-7 triumph over Llandovery.
