The two Welsh regions joined forces to raise the money after New Zealanders from both clubs were moved by the devastating scenes in Christchurch and joined forces to raise money for the British Red Cross appeal.
Players and coaches from the regions attended the pre-match hospitality at the Wales v Ireland RBS 6 Nations match a little over a week ago and auctioned some great prizes.
Signed shirts, coaching sessions and hospitality spaces for next season’s Six Nations were all up for grab.
Blues players Ben Blair, Michael Paterson, Casey Laulala, Paul Tito were all in attendance while Ospreys coach Sean Holley acted as M.C and auctioneer.
A grand total of £5,750 (13,000NZD) was raised and Blues second row Michael Paterson who grew up in Christchurch said,
“We’ve all been overwhelmed at the generosity shown by the Welsh people in supporting the appeal.”
“There are many similarities and a strong bond between the people of Wales and New Zealand with the love of rugby being the most obvious example and it’s great that the sport can help raise such a large amount of money for that is a very good cause.”
“All the New Zealanders in Wales would I’m sure like to thank those who bid in the auction and we should also thank Clive, Mick and Frances of The Towers Hotel for allowing us to hold it at their function.”
Casey Laulala, who played for the Crusaders in Christchurch said,
“I spent most of my life in Canterbury and know all the streets, so it was obviously a shock to everyone.”
“I’m glad that we were able to help in some small way by helping raise some money.”
“I’d like to thank all those who bid, everyone at the Towers Hotel and Sean Holley for being such a great auctioneer and getting us as much money as possible.”
“It was a great event hopefully the money can be used to help rebuild the city.”
