Merthyr v Pontypridd

Share this page:

The local rivals go head-to-head in the cup in this derby clash at the Y Wern ground Merthyr, kicking off at 2:30pm.

Merthyr have a number of former Ponty players in their ranks – the likes of Neil Burnett, Ryan Harris, Matthew Rees and Rhys James – and with former centre Paul Matthews as one of their coaching staff.

Familiarity will certainly not breed contempt in a one-off cup tie with Pontypridd well aware of the need to show the utmost respect to their division one east hosts.

Pontypridd once more make a raft of changes from the line up which started in their hard fought away league win at Cardiff midweek. Merthyr boy Gavin Dacey takes over the captaincy in midfield where he will partner powerhouse centre Gary Williams.

Blues Academy youngsters, prop WillGriff John and no8 Owen Sheppeard are given their opportunity, with dynamic flanker Darren Waters returning to the fray.
